Former Northwestern High School swimmer Jaylyn Harrison was named MVP of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s swimming and diving meet in Hobart, Indiana, on Saturday after scoring eight wins and setting two meet records to help Bethel University win the 10-team meet.
Individually, Harrison won the 50 freestyle (:23.76), 200 free (1:54.44) and the 100 freestyle (:52.09). Earlier in the 100 preliminaries, Harrison set a meet record clocking :51.85 to take the top seed for the finals.
In relays, Harrison teamed with Eliza Nuet, Dominique van Vuure and Aixa Recchioni to win the 200 free relay (1:36.57). She teamed with Recchioni, Teagan Risher and Eliza Nuet to win the 400 free relay (3:52.53). She teamed with Recchioni, Makalynn VanEerden and Eliza Nuet to win the 200 medley relay in a meet-record 1:45.49. She swam with van Vuure, Josefina Gonzalez and Recchioni to win the 800 free relay (7:45.59). And she joined Isabela Nuet, van Vuure and Recchioni to win the 400 free relay (3:31.71).
Bethel posted a score of 769.5 to take first place. Olivet Nazarene was second at 662.5.
IUK hoops teams sweep
IU Kokomo’s men’s and women’s basketball team swept Brescia in River States Conference play on Saturday as the Cougars celebrated Senior Day.
The IUK men thumped Brescia 96-63. With IUK down two midway through the first half, Noah Harris hit a 3-pointer to put IUK up 24-23 and the Cougars led the rest of the way. IUK closed the half on a 23-8 run for a 44-31 lead at the break.
Noah Harris led IUK’s offense with 25 points, Dell DeMyers added 19 and Max Newman had a huge double-double of 18 points and 19 rebounds as well as dishing four assists and taking four steals. Western product Evan Kretz scored 11, Chris Chin had 10 points and seven assists, and Drake Moore scored nine.
In the women’s game, IUK trailed 36-27 at halftime but narrowed the gap to 49-44 after three quarters, then outscored Brescia 19-9 in the final period to win 63-58. The Cougars held Brescia scoreless for a span of 6:53 of the fourth and went on a 12-0 run to turn the game.
Taylor product Kelsi Langley led IUK with 17 points and eight rebounds. Anna Kiser and Mia Catey added 16 each, and Cameryn Rector and Western’s Mackenzie York scored six each.
The Cougar men (18-8, 9-5 RSC) play at IU Columbus at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. The IUK women (9-16, 5-9 RSC) follow at 7:30 against IUC.
Bostic helps Illinois edge Nebraska
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Former Northwestern High School star Kendall Bostic posted her 17th double-double of the season Sunday to help Illinois’ women’s basketball team beat Nebraska 77-68 in a close Big Ten contest.
Bostic scored 19 points on 9 of 16 shooting, grabbed 11 rebounds and had an assist and a block for Illinois. McKenzie Adalia scored a team-high 23 points, Berry Wallace 15 and Genesis Bryant 12.
Alexis Markowski had 28 points for Nebraska (17-9, 8-7 Big Ten). Nebraska led 16-13 after a quarter and 31-30 at halftime before the Illini took the lead for good in the third quarter. Illinois took a 52-44 lead into the final period.
The Illini (21-5, 11-4 Big Ten) play at No. 1 UCLA Thursday night.
Utah tops Kansas in men's hoops
SALT LAKE CITY – Utah beat No. 17 Kansas 74-67 Saturday night at Utah in Big 12 men’s basketball action.
Kokomo’s Flory Bidunga played 20 minutes off the bench for Kansas, scoring eight points with four rebounds, an assist, a block and a steal. Zeke Mayo scored 14 points to lead Kansas and Dajuan Harris Jr. scored 14.
The Jayhawks (17-8, 8-6 Big 12) visit BYU Tuesday night.
MSU beats Illinois in men's hoops
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – No. 11 Michigan State outscored Illinois 42-24 in the second half to overturn a four-point halftime deficit and pull away from the host Illini in the second half for a 79-65 MSU win. With the victory, MSU coach Tom Izzo passed former Indiana coach Bob Knight for most victories in the Big Ten. Izzo now has 354 league wins.
Jaxson Kohler scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for MSU (20-5, 11-3 Big Ten) and Tre Holloman scored 14.
Tipton’s Ben Humrichous scored six points, grabbed six rebounds and had an assist and a block for the Illini. Kasparas Jakucionis and Morez Johnson Jr. led the Illini with 17 points each.
Illinois (17-9, 9-7 Big Ten) plays at Wisconsin Tuesday night.
IU blows past Purdue in women's hoops.
BLOOMINGTON – Indiana wasted no time putting Purdue in a hole, opening a 30-10 lead after a quarter and 48-22 lead at halftime before posting a comfortable win 78-56 win.
Sydney Parrish led the Hoosiers with 19 points, Yarden Garzon added 18, Shay Ciezki 16, Karoline Striplin eight and Chloe Moore-McNeil seven. Garzon took eight rebounds and she, Striplin and Moore-McNeil combined for 13 assists.
Former Northwestern High School star McKenna Layden had a career-best 10 rebounds and added five points, two assists and three steals for Purdue. Kendall Puryear scored 15 points and Destini Lombard 10.
Indiana (16-9, 8-6 Big Ten) hosts No. 8 Ohio State on Thursday. Next for Purdue (9-16, 2-12 Big Ten) is a home game against Minnesota at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
